SMU announced the addition of Emory Oakes to the 2024-25 incoming freshman class. Oakes hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma where she rowed for three seasons with Tulsa Youth Rowing.

What is your favorite rowing memory?
- Winning Central Regionals in the 1x and qualifying for US Rowing Youth Nationals with my teammates!
Why did you choose to row for SMU?
-I immediately loved the coaches and the team. It feels like an honor to represent a school I already love and feel connected to. It's a special time at SMU with the move to the ACCs.
What stuck out to you about the team in your decision-making process that made the decision feel right?
- You can tell it's a family that works hard to achieve goals together.
What did you love about Dallas when you visited?
-As an Oklahoman, I've spent lots of time in Dallas. SMU and surrounding area is a beautiful place to call home for the next four years.
What was something about SMU/Dallas that surprised you?
- You can sense how deep the community is on campus and the support from the city. When you experience it, even on a college visit, you feel like a part that community already.
What impact do you plan to make in your first year?
- My plans my first year are to contribute to the best of my abilities as a student and athlete.
What are you most excited about for your freshman year?
-I am excited to be in a new place, with new challenges and get to know new people.
What are you looking forward to doing most when you get to Dallas?
-I'm looking forward to rowing with my new teammates, exploring all that SMU and Dallas have to offer. Ready to breakout my cowboy boots!
Top rowing accomplishments and placement?
- I've earned 15 medal finishes the last couple of year but I'm the most proud to represent Tulsa with back-to-back trips to US Rowing Youth Nationals. I went as the Central Region Champion in the Youth 1X in 2023 and am headed back as the 2nd place qualifier in a couple weeks in the Youth 2X.
