NORTHBROOK, Ill. (SMU) – SMU Football graduate student
Jonathan McGill was named to the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Wednesday in a release by the Wuerffel Foundation and Allstate.
The Wuerffel Foundation is partnering with Allstate to bring together two of the most meaningful awards in college football this year.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will honor a student-athlete who is inspired to serve others and make a positive impact on society. Together with the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the awards will mark college football's premier honors for community service.
McGill, a native of Coppell, Texas, has been a pillar in the Mustang program both on the field and off. He was a team captain in his debut season for SMU last year, and was a third-team All-AAC selection and a first-team member for Dave Campbell's Texas Football. He was part of an elite playmaking secondary that limited teams to 188.4 passing yards per game in 2023, best in the conference, while helping the Mustangs to their first conference championship since 1984.
In the community, McGill was a guest keynote speaker at his high school, Coppell. He spoke about the athletic leadership council and his journey growing up in Coppell and both at Stanford and SMU, focusing on how to be an effective leader.
He also volunteered to speak to the graduating fifth grade class at S.S. Dillow Elementary in Fort Worth about the transition from elementary to middle school, giving perspective and guidance to help the students have the best chance to thrive in a new setting. He also handed out t-shirts and signed autographs for the students.
McGill has also spoken at his church to the graduating high school class about his testimony and the importance of developing his faith while in college.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, college football's premier award for community service, is presented annually to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field. Named after Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer
Danny Wuerffel, the award honors the former NFL quarterback's commitment to inspiring greater service and unity in the world.
The announcement of the 2024 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN, and the formal presentation of the 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will take place February 1, 2025 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, GA.
