DALLAS (SMU) — Senior Bailey Sparks's lone goal earns SMU's 1-0 season opener win over Air Force on Thursday.
The Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree's match winner marks the Mustangs' first goal in the Atlantic Coast Conference era. Sparks's goal was also his first penalty kick goal for SMU.
Despite having trouble finding the net, the Mustangs displayed their offensive prowess by recording 20 shots with 11 shots on goal while only conceding two shots. The last time they had 20+ shots was on their 2-1 win over Memphis last year.
"We were unfortunate at times not to score but credit to (Air Force's) coach Kevin Doyle on forming a very competitive team," said head coach Kevin Hudson. "I think it was a good result for us and the future is bright for the group."
Junior goalkeeper Chance Johnson earned his first career win and clean sheet with two saves.
How it Happened
The Mustangs stepped the pedal to the metal as soon as the whistle was blown, but they could not find the back of the net. They posted 12 shots with seven on goal to Air Force's one shot in the first half.
Chris Deamon saw the Mustangs' first chance on goal in the fourth minute, but a defender blocked his effort. Daniel Escorcia led the charge in the first half with two shots on goal, but Air Force's William Collins showed his goalkeeping expertise with five saves.
Jaylinn Mitchell kicks off the second half with a solo run from the right wing, but his low cross failed to find Milton Lopez.
After a rally of offensive sequences, Sparks forced a penalty kick with a one-time volley that hit an Air Force defender's arm. Sparks himself took the penalty kick and slot into the bottom corner.
The Mustangs remain on the offensive throughout the match, and the scoreline remains the same at the final whistle.
