Svajda Reaches USTA Boys National Championships Semifinals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis sophomore Trevor Svajda reached the semifinal round of the USTA Boys National Championships, Friday. He made the semis after defeating the No. 5 seed Alex Razeghi in straight sets (7-6(1), 6-2).
 
The singles draw consists of 193 participants from across the nation. After earning a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, Svajda handily won his round of 128 match against Cyrus Zia (6-2, 6-1). He advanced through the round of 64 with a victory over No. 33 seed Meecah Bigun (6-2, 6-1) and took care of business in the round of 32 against 25th seed Kase Schinnerer (6-3, 6-3).
 
Svajda went on to defeat No. 15 seed Saahith Jayaramen (6-3, 7-6(1)) in the round of 16 before winning his quarterfinal matchup against Razeghi. He has yet to drop a set in the tournament.
 
Svajda will face No. 8 seed Jack Kennedy in the semifinal match scheduled for 10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
 
On the doubles bracket, Svajda and his doubles partner Kaylan Bigun have also made the semifinals. Coming into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Svajda and Bigun earned a bye in the round of 128 before winning their round of 64 match over Ian Bracks and Evan Burnett (6-3, 6-7(4), 10-8).
 
The pair advanced past the round of 32 by defeating Joseph Oyebog and Abhishek Thorat (7-5, 6-4), then proceeded to win the round of 16 over No. 15 seed Maximus Dussault and Dominick Mosejczuk (6-3, 6-1).
 
Svajda and Bigun pulled an upset in the quarterfinals by knoicking off No. 3 seed Noah Johnston and Benjamin Willwerth (6-4, 6-3) in straight sets. The pair will face No. 14 seed Meecah Bigun and Mitchell Lee in the semifinals.
