SMU’s Comeback Effort Falls Short Against Miami

Box Score | Final Game Book

MIAMI, Fla. (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball program's fourth-quarter comeback fell short as the Mustangs lost 70-63 to Miami on Sunday inside the Watsco Center.

With three Mustangs in double-digits and Jessica Peterson's ninth double-double of the season, SMU kept the game close through the first three quarters but could not complete the fourth comeback. Miami's Haley Cavinder scored 32 points and made six three-pointers as the Hurricanes combined to make 11 in the game. SMU shot 33% from the floor and scored 30 points in the paint to Miami's 18, but it was not enough.

The Mustangs are now 10-11 (2-7 ACC) overall, while Miami improved to 12-8 (2-7 ACC) and ended a seven-game losing streak.

Jessica Peterson ended her night with her ninth double-double of the season with 20 rebounds and 10 points. It is her second 20-point rebound game of the year.

TK Pitts scored a season-high 14 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field. She also had three assists and three steals. As a team, SMU had 15 assists on 24 made baskets.

Nya Robertson had 10 points, her 20th double-digit scoring game of the season. Kaysia Woods had nine points, and Donavia Hall scored a career- high eight points.

Miami jumped out to a 12-5 halfway through the first before Kylie Marshall connected from behind the arc, sparking the SMU offense. Pitts had four points in the quarter as the Mustangs trailed by three at the end of the period.

Both teams continued to fight for control of the game, trading buckets back and forth.  Hall hit two from behind the arc and Robertson chimed in five to keep the score close heading to the half. Peterson hauled in 12 rebounds in the first half as SMU trailed 32-28 to the Hurricanes. The Mustangs recorded eight assists on 11 made baskets in the half.

SMU began the third on an 8-2 run before Miami countered with an 8-0 run of their own. Peterson answered for the Mustangs with a tough and-1 finish as she reached double-double status. Miami hit six three-pointers in the quarter and extended its lead to nine at the end of the period.

The Hurricanes started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run and pushed the lead to 18 points. SMU responded with a 7-0 run of their own, highlighted by a Marshall corner three. A Woods three-pointer cut the lead down to single-digits with three minutes left in the game.

The Mustangs trailed only by three after Woods converted a four-point play with 1:20 left on the clock. Miami drew a foul and extended the lead to five. SMU missed a three on the fowling possession, which led to more Hurricane foul shots, essentially icing the game.
