Mustangs Take Down Cal in 76-65 Victory
SMU's Bigs, Cross Step Up Against Cal
SMU hosts Stanford at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. The Mustangs are 16-5 overall with a 7-3 ACC record after a 76-65 victory over Cal on Wednesday. SMU has won two straight, five of its past six games and 12 of its past 15 contests.
In the 76-65 win over Cal, the Mustangs had 10 steals while outrebounding the Bears 47-36 and holding them to 34.3% shooting.
Chuck Harris scored 20 points to lead SMU while
Matt Cross had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
B.J. Edwards added 15 points and a career-high nine rebounds while
Boopie Miller scored 13. Miller and Harris each had three steals while Edwards and Miller each had five assists.
SMU is averaging 82.8 points (1st ACC, 25th NCAA) while shooting 47.8% (1st ACC, 47th NCAA) overall and 37.9% on threes (3rd ACC, 26th NCAA). The Mustangs are also leading the ACC in total rebounds (40.4, 22nd NCAA) and bench points (28.3, 36th NCAA). SMU is second in the ACC in rebound margin (+7.2, 19th NCAA), second in offensive rebounds (13.2, 33rd NCAA), second in assists (16.2, 45th NCAA), second in steals (7.7), second in scoring margin (+11.0, 44th NCAA), third in fastbreak points (14.2, 34th NCAA), third in field-goal defense (40.5%, 47th NCAA), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.37) and fifth in blocked shots (4.0).
Boopie Miller is averaging 13.8 points (21st ACC), 5.7 assists (5th ACC, 36th NCAA) and 1.6 steals (7th ACC) with a 2.48 assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd ACC).
Chuck Harris is next in scoring at 12.2 (34th ACC) while hitting 44.4% from three.
B.J. Edwards is averaging 10.8 points (43rd ACC), 3.4 assists (13th ACC) and 2.3 steals (2nd ACC, 22nd NCAA).

First-year head coach
Andy Enfield took the helm of the SMU program following 11 seasons at USC, where he led the Trojans to five of the last eight NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021. He took over an SMU program that finished last season 20-13 after earning an NIT bid. That was the Mustangs' sixth postseason berth in the past 10 possible postseasons, including two NCAA bids and four NITs.

Chuck Harris scored 20 points,
Matt Cross had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and SMU defeated California 76-65 on Wednesday.
B.J. Edwards had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists for SMU (16-5, 7-3 ACC), which won for the fifth time in six games.
Boopie Miller had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Golden Bears, who trailed by double digits for much of the second half, got within 61-55 near the five-minute mark before a three-point play by Harris helped SMU rebuild a 12-point lead at 67-55 with 3 1/2 minutes to go. A 3-pointer by Cal's Jeremiah Wilkinson cut SMU's lead to 69-62 with 2:25 remaining then the Mustangs wrapped up the win with five made free throws in six attempts. Rytis Petraitis had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Cal (11-10, 4-6). Wilkinson scored 16 points and Javon Blacksher Jr. added 13 points. After a scoring slump of six points in 5 1/2 minutes in which they fell behind 21-17, the high-scoring Mustangs (83.1 points per game) regrouped and scored 22 points in the final 6-plus minutes of the first half. SMU led 39-29 at halftime.

THE SERIES VS. STANFORD (2-2): The series is tied with SMU winning the most recent pair of meetings in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. SMU won, 85-70, at Stanford on Nov. 20, 2015 and followed with a victory, 72-49, at Moody Coliseum on Dec. 19, 2016. The first game was an 80-70 loss in Moody Coliseum on Dec. 28, 1963. The second meeting saw third-ranked Stanford win 86-51 in a preseason NIT game on Nov. 18, 1998.Â
LAST MEETING VS STANFORD (W, 72-49 vs. Stanford on Dec. 19, 2016): DALLAS (AP) -- Sterling Brown scored 16 points and SMU ran out to a 32-point lead in the first half of a 72-49 victory against Stanford. Semi Ojeleye had 13 points and seven rebounds in the 22nd consecutive non-conference home win for the Mustangs (9-3), who have won five straight. SMU shot 59 percent in the first half to 21 percent for the Cardinal (7-4), going ahead 12-0, 30-7 and 44-12 in the most impressive showing under first-year coach Tim Jankovich. Stanford leading scorer Reid Travis didn't get a shot in the first half, when Cardinal starters scored one point. He scored all 10 of his points in the second half, while Marcus Sheffield led Stanford with 13 points.
ACRISURE HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONS (Nov. 26-27): SMU dominated the second half in a 77-60 victory over Washington State to win the Acrisure Holiday Invitational in Palm Springs, California the night before Thanksgiving.
Boopie Miller was named the tournament MVP, averaging 16.0 points and 5.0 assists, which included the game-winning shot with 2.1 seconds left in the 79-77 semifinal win over Cal Baptist. In the victory over Washington State, SMU outscored the Cougars 50-29 in the second half to claim the title. Five Mustangs scored in double figures, led by
Boopie Miller with 16 points and five assists. The Mustangs had a 51-25 rebound advantage with Samet YiÄŸitoÄŸlu recording his first double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

HEAD COACH ANDY ENFIELD... was named SMU's Head Men's Basketball on April 1, 2024. A proven winner, Enfield burst onto the coaching scene in 2013 when, in his second year as a head coach, he guided Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following that success, he was hired by the University of Southern California (USC), where he led the Trojans to five of the last eight NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021.Â
He came to SMU after 11 seasons at USC, where he compiled a 220-147 record. Enfield quickly brought success to the basketball program upon his arrival, as the Trojans set a school single-season win record and posted the most wins in program history over two-year, three-year, four-year, five-year, six-year, seven-year and eight-year periods. Enfield's 220 wins ranks third on USC's all-time wins list, trailing only Sam Barry (260) and Forrest Twogood (251). In 13 seasons as a head coach Enfield has a 261-175 mark.Â

His teams also excelled in the classroom by setting the program's top team GPAs. Enfield brought in eight consecutive Top-30 recruiting classes, with the 2022 class ranking No. 7 and the 2023 class ranking No. 4.

Over his final seven seasons at USC, the Trojans had eight players selected in the NBA Draft, tied for the fifth-most by any program in the country, with Evan Mobley going No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft and Onyeka Okongwu being selected No. 6 in the 2020 Draft. USC was one of three teams to have had at least one player selected in six of the last seven NBA Drafts. In total, 11 players during Enfield's time at USC have made the NBA.

DAVID B. MILLER COURT: On Dec. 5, 2018, SMU named the Moody Coliseum court after David B. Miller, alumnus and current chair of the Board of Trustees. He was a three-year starter on the basketball team and a member of the 1971-72 Southwest Conference Co-Championship team. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Miller and his wife, Carolyn Lacy Miller, have committed over $100 million to SMU, including more than $50 million to the Cox School of Business, $20 million toward the expansion and renovation of Moody Coliseum and $10 million to the ACC Competitiveness Campaign as a member of the First Week Society.
