The 22nd-ranked SMU men's swimming team hits the road for the final time prior to the ACC Championships when it heads to Austin to compete in The Sterkel Classic at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. on the campus of the University of Texas. This marks the second time the team has competed in Austin in the past month, facing off against the top-ranked Longhorns in a dual meet on January 10.
IN THE POLLS
SMU currently is receiving votes in the CSCAA Top 25 after being as high as 19 this season. The Mustangs also sit at 22 in the SwimSwam Power Rankings, marking the first time the team has been ranked in both polls at the same time this year.Â
MUSTANGS REACHING NCAA STANDARDS
18 different Mustangs have reached NCAA qualifying standards in at least one event. This was highlighted on night one of the SMU Invite, with the 800 Free Relay team of Jack Hoagland, Jack Forrest, Chris Mykkanen and Harold Lockhart reaching SMU's lone A Cut of the season. This mark qualified all four for the NCAA Championships in events they reached an NCAA Standard in. The mark secures the Mustangs spots in multiple individual events: 100 Free (Lockhart), 200 Free (Mykkanen, Lockhart), 500 Free (Hoagland, Forrest, Lockhart), 1650 Free (Forrest, Hoagland), 400 IM (Hoagland).
NEW MUSTANGS IN THE RECORD BOOKS
This season, multiple Mustangs have earned or improved their spots on the SMU All-Time Top Performers list, with some even setting school records. A majority of these fell during the SMU Invite, with 27 new times added to the list. The 200 Medley Relay squad earned the first school record of the year when the team of Jack Berube, Joe Rusnock, Russell Exum and Sage Sungail touched the wall in 1:24.35. Later in the week, Jack Berube touched the wall in 46.14 during the 100 back prelims to break the record previously held by his dad, Ryan Berube, by just .01 seconds. The evening session on Friday saw the 400 medley relay record fall, with Jack Berube, Joe Rusnock, Russell Exum and Sage Sungail finishing in 3:06.45.
