SYRACUSE, N.Y. (SMU) — No. 25 SMU Men's Soccer fell 2-0 at Syracuse on Saturday.
The Mustangs dropped three points despite dominating 57 percent of the possession and outshooting Syracuse 10 to six.
SMU is now 2-1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
How It Happened
In an even start of the match with both teams having equal possession of the ball, SMU was first to see a big chance as
Charles-Emile Brunet's cross just missed
Mukisa Emmanuel across the goal.
The first half progressed sporadically, as both teams had their spells of dominance.
Luis Flores was close to scoring the first goal of the evening, but his quick-turn shot at the top of the penalty box was inches wide of the goal posts.
Syracuse took the lead at the end of the first half as Landon Darko found himself one-on-one versus
Martin Dominguez, and the striker slotted the ball to open the scoring in the 43rd minute.
SMU trailed 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
The Mustangs came out on the front foot at the start of the second half. They saw chances for an equalizer from Flores and
Stephan Soghomonian within the first 10 minutes of the period.
While SMU was dominant, the hosts managed to extend the lead in the 65
th minute with a long shot by Carlos Zambrano.
Emmanuel,
Milton Lopez and
Jaylinn Mitchell saw and carved multiple half-chances as the Mustangs stayed on the front foot in the remainder of the half, but the scoreline remained 2-0 at the 90-minute whistle.
