Postgame Press Conference
DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Soccer won 4-0 over Cal at Washburne Stadium on Friday.
Milton Lopez opened the scoreline in the 28
th minute, scoring his third match-winner of the season.
Stephan Soghomonian scored a hat trick following Lopez's goal in the Mustangs' dominant showing against the Golden Bears.
SMU dominated 58 percent of the possession while outshooting Cal 15 to four in its second Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season.
The 4-0 win was SMU's highest-scoring ACC match in program history.
SMU improved its record to 2-0-2 in ACC play and 5-2-3 overall.
How It Happened
The Mustangs were on the front foot as soon as the whistle blew, creating multiple chances on every front.
SMU controlled 61 percent of the possession in the first half, outshooting the Golden Bears five to two.
Lopez gave SMU the lead in the 28
th minute with a strong shot from outside the penalty box.
Jaylinn Mitchell set Lopez up right on top of the penalty box and the forward swung a curling shot towards the top left corner.
Soghomonian extended the lead to 2-0 in the 41
st minute with his second goal of the season.
Daniel Escorcia threaded a through ball that found
Luis Flores on the byline. Flores set it up for Soghomonian, who was wide open in front of the goal.
The Mustangs were up 2-0 after 45 minutes.
SMU remained in control as the second half commenced.
Soghomonian scored his second goal in the 41st minute of the match to give SMU the 3-0 lead.
Ryan Clanton-Pimentel swung a cross from the right wing, the goalkeeper saved Soghomonian's first-time volley, but he scored on the rebound.
The Mustangs kept the pressure on, and it did not take long before Clanton-Pimentel won a penalty kick.
The sophomore defender was fouled inside the penalty box in the 58
th minute, and Soghomonian stepped up to take the spot kick. He hits it low to the middle to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Mustangs' defense stood tall to the final whistle to take the clean sheet win.

- This is SMU's first home ACC win of the season.
- The Mustangs currently sit at fourth in the ACC standings with eight points.
- The Mustangs improved their all-time record against Cal to 6-1-1. This is the first time SMU has won with more than one goal over the Golden Bears.
- The 4-0 win is the Mustangs' highest-scoring win since they beat Central Arkansas 5-0 on Aug. 28, 2023.
- Stephan Soghomonian became the first Mustang to score a hat trick since Jelldrik Dallmann against Temple (Nov. 9, 2023).
- Soghomonian now has four goals this season.
- Milton Lopez scored his third game-winner of the season. He has scored three goals in the last two games.
- SMU's backline earned its third shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Martin Dominguez registered his second clean sheet of 2025.
- Daniel Escorcia made his fourth assist of the season, leading the Mustangs in that category.
