DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Soccer fell 1-0 to No. 6 Virginia in its regular season finale at Washburne Stadium on Friday Night.
 
The Mustangs fell short despite a dominant showing. They took nine shots and confined the Cavaliers to a season-low of four shot attempts, while controlling 58 percent of possession through 90 minutes.
 
SMU completed its second regular season in the Atlantic Coast Conference in seventh place, securing a first-round home match in the ACC Championship, with a 3-2-3 record in conference play. The first round of the tournament will be played on Wednesday.
 
How It Happened
Virginia was on the front foot at the start of the match, where both teams saw scarce attacking opportunities.
 
SMU grew into the game and got a spell of possession in the final stretch of the half, but the first 45 minutes ended scoreless.
 
The Mustangs flipped the script at the start of the second half by controlling the tempo, outshooting Virginia six to one in the first 20 minutes of the half.
 
Despite the Mustangs' constant pressure, Virginia took the lead with a post play in the 84th minute.
 
The match ended 1-0 in favor of Virginia, who won the regular-season conference title.
