Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mustangs Fall At The Buzzer To (RV/25) Kansas State

DALLAS (SMU) – In a defensive battle, the SMU women's basketball program fell 46-44 in heartbreaking fashion as (rv/25) Kansas State hit a time-expiring buzzer beater on Saturday inside Moody Coliseum.

SMU (1-1, 0-0 ACC) led by as much as nine in the third quarter and was up five with two minutes left as Kansas State (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) closed the game on a 7-0 run as the Wildcats' Gina Garcia made a floater as time expired to win the game.

Zahra King led all scorers with nine points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field. Jzaniya Harriel finished with seven points, five of which came in the fourth quarter. Kyla Deck and Sahnya Jah each had six points, while Jah also led the Mustangs in rebounds with seven.

Neither team had its offense clicking, as Kansas State shot 31% from the field,14% from three-point range and had 20 turnovers. SMU had double-digit steals for the second game in a row with 12, while the team shot 28% for the game, 20% from beyond the arc and was 4-8 from the line.

Both teams took a while to find their offensive rhythm in the first.  Grace Hall got SMU going by knocking down one from beyond the arc. The Mustangs forced three turnovers in the first four minutes and held K-State to 0-8 from the field after the Wildcats made their first basket. SMU led 7-6 at the end of the first.

The Mustang offense woke up in the second quarter as back-to-back buckets from Paulia Paris looked like the spark SMU needed. The Mustangs out scored K-State 18-12 in the period and closed the quarter on a 4-0 run, capped off with a Miriam Ibezim basket. SMU led by seven, 25-18, and had momentum on their side heading into the break.

Coming out of the half, Kansas State started the third on a 4-0 run and got right back in the game. SMU responded with a 9-2 run highlighted by a Zahra King three and reverse layup to put SMU up nine halfway through the third.

The Wildcats would go on their own 6-0 run, ended by a Harriel step back jumper to end the period as SMU still had a five-point advantage heading into the fourth.

SMU was doing everything in its power to grab control of the game as Harriel led the charge as she went coast-to-coast on a steal and score, then blocked a K-State layup on the following possession.

Deck drained a three-pointer to put SMU up eight with 4:38 left in the game.

K-State was not going down without a fight and hit a corner three with 1:36 left to cut the lead to two.

After a Pairs missed three-pointer, Garcia drove down and tied the game with 47 seconds left. SMU's go-ahead three-pointer from Harriel bounced of the rim, which led to the K-State buzzer beater to end the game.
