SEMMES, Ala. (SMU) – SMU men's golf captured the team and individual titles with another strong performance at the Hal Williams Collegiate from Magnolia Grove Golf Course.
The Mustangs won their second straight tournament title with a wire-to-wire victory. They posted 10-under in the first round to lead by one stroke and extended that with another 10-under score in round two. The Mustangs shot five-under in round three to edge Kent State (-24) by one stroke. SMU's final score of 25-under par was the ninth lowest in program history. The back-to-back victories marked the Mustangs first time to accomplish that feat since October of 2019.
Zachary Kingsland won the individual title with a score of 14-under, tied for the sixth lowest 54 hole score at SMU. Kingsland carded three rounds in the 60s on the week shooting, 66, 64 and 69. He won the title by three strokes. The win gave him two tournament titles on the season adding to his win at the Trinity Forest Invitational. The Austin, Texas native becomes the seventh Mustang to win two times in a season joining Colt Knost (2006-07 (3), 2005-06, 2004-05), Nathan Petronzio (2022-23), Bryson DeChambeau (2014-15), Kelly Kraft (2008-09), Jerome Theunis (2001-02) and Hank Kuehne (1996-97). Additionally, the Mustangs now have three individual wins this season with
Will Sides victory at the Stephens Cup.
Will Sides climbed 12 spots on the final day leaderboard with a closing round 66. He finished the tournament in 12
th place. Sides leads the team with 13 rounds of par or better.
Enrique Dimayuga finished in a tie for 20
th place, his fifth top 20 finish in five starts as a Mustang. The graduate senior shot 69 in each of the opening two rounds.
Matthew Foster shot even par for the tournament. He finished in a tie for 33
rd place with a best round of 69 coming on the opening day.
Aaron Jarvis took home a share of 52
nd place. Jarvis carded a 70 in the middle round.
Competing as individuals,
Areen Aggarwal moved up into 44
th on the final day while
J. Holland Humphries finished in a tie for 65
th.
The Mustangs look to win three titles in a row for the first time since at least 1985-86 when they tee it up at the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate in Las Vegas, March 2-4.
