DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis is set to begin its ITA National Indoor Championship campaign against top-seeded Wake Forest at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex, Friday.
The Mustangs are 7-3 after coming off a 4-3 win over Florida, Feb. 7.
SMU vs WAKE FOREST
- SMU is 2-0 against Wake Forest. The Mustangs won their previous meeting 4-1.
- The Mustangs' previous meeting with the Deacs was in 1999.
- The No. 2-ranked Demon Deacons will be the Mustangs' second ranked opponent this season.
ITA NATIONAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
- The Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex will be home to peak college tennis Feb. 14-18.
- SMU will host Kentucky, Michigan, NC State, Texas, Texas A&M, Virginia and Wake Forest in the first two rounds of the championship.
- The Mustangs were seeded No. 8, while the Demon Deacons earned the top seed on SMU's side of the bracket.
- SMU is one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams competing in the tournament. NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest will begin their tournaments in Dallas while Duke and Stanford will start at Baylor.
- The Mustangs have two ITA National Indoor Championship titles. They won their first title in 1979 under the guidance of Bill McClain and their second championship under Dennis Ralston in 1983.
SMU vs FLORIDA
- SMU Men's Tennis defeated Florida 4-3 at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex last Friday.
- The Mustangs took the doubles point to get the head start, and while the Gators were able to even score in singles, two wins from Ofek Shimanov and Jerry Barton in the final stretch sealed the match for SMU.
- With the win, SMU will enter next week's ITA National Indoor Championship with a 7-3 record.
SMU vs SAN DIEGO
- The Mustangs' pair of Jarry Barton and Maks Silagy fell to the No. 1-ranked Oliver Tarvet/Stian Klaassen (6-1) but SMU bounced back to win the doubles point.
- Trevor Svajda and Louis Cloud won their doubles match (6-4) before Xavier Calvelo and Vikas Deo clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
- In a close singles duel that lasted two hours, the Toreros took the first four singles points to clinch the match.
MUSTANG SIGHTINGS IN THE DALLAS OPEN
- Three Mustangs competed in the 2025 Dallas Open this week.
- Eric Hadigian and Georgi Georgiev earned singles qualifiers wildcards. Trevor Svajda earned a main draw wildcard.
- Georgiev became the first Mustang to win a Dallas Open match. He defeated No. 157-ranked Radu Albot in the first round of qualifiers.
SPRING OF 2025
- Of the 29 matches on the coming spring slate, 16 are against foes who finished in the ITA top 75 rankings last spring, eight of which were in the top 20. It also includes defending national champion and Metroplex rival TCU.
- Of the 13 ACC teams SMU will face this spring, 12 finished in the top 75 last season.
FALL OF 2024
- The Mustangs recorded a total of 48 individual wins in the fall of 2024.
- Trevor Svajda (singles) earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Individual Championships in the fall of 2024 after making the semifinal round of the ITA Sectional Championships.
- Svajda advanced to the round of 32 of the tournament for the second consecutive time.
SETTING THE SCENE
- SMU reached the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season under Head Coach Grant Chen in the spring of 2024.
- The Mustangs went 17-11 in the 2024 spring season, including a 13-2 home mark and a 5-2 record versus American Athletic Conference opponents.
- Trevor Svajda (singles), Adam Neff (singles/doubles), and Huntley Allen (doubles) earned AAC All-Conference Honors. Svajda went on to compete in the NCAA Singles Individual Championships, with Neff and Allen playing in the Doubles Championships.
- Trevor Svajda was named the AAC Freshman of the Year, voted on by conference coaches.
- The Mustangs defeated three ranked opponents (No. 57 Cornell, No. 34 Middle Tennessee, No. 27 Memphis).
SERVIN' SVAJDA
- Svajda earned a wildcard for the 2025 Dallas Open, as announced by the tournament.
- He was ranked No. 70 in the first spring ITA singles rankings.
- He has one win against a ranked opponent this season.
- Sophomore Trevor Svajda joined SMU as the No. 1 tennis recruit in the nation.
- Svajda was ranked no. 19 at the start of the 2024 fall season and ended the season ranked 48th.
- Svajda defeated No. 77 ranked Azuma Visaya in the first flight singles on the Mustangs' season-opener at Hawaii.
- He earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Individual Championship after reaching the semifinal round of the ITA Sectional Championship with a win over Nebraska's Calvin Meuller in the quarterfinals.
- Svajda earned AAC All-Conference honors (singles) and was named the AAC Freshman of the Year in 2024.
- Svajda has a 16-7 record in his freshman season with the Mustangs.
- Svajda earned five singles wins over ranked opponents last season (No. 17, No. 29, No. 35, No. 68, No. 107).
OFEK IN THE DAVIS CUP
- Ofek defeated No. 265-ranked Daniel Masur from Germany in his Davis Cup match for Israel.
- Freshman Ofek Shimanov was selected to the Israel National Team for the 2025 Davis Cup, the Israeli Tennis Association.
- Shimanov won the 2024 Israel Championship at the Jerusalem Tennis and Education Center in December. He defeated Ural Kimhi (6-2, 6-3) to win the championship.
- The Ramla, Israel native, is undefeated to begin his career as a Mustang after joining SMU in January. He has a record of 2-0 singles and a record of 1-0 doubles.
- Shimanov won his SMU debut by defeating Hawaii's Andy Hernandez (6-0, 6-2) at Hawaii on January 6.
2024 DALLAS OPEN
- Five Mustangs - Adam Neff, Trevor Svajda, Jerry Barton, Julian Steinhausen and Huntley Allen - competed in the 2024 Dallas Open.
- Neff headlined the tournament's College Night as a singles main draw wild card against Jordan Thompson.
- Allen and Steinhausen went three sets in their main draw doubles match against Ben Shelton and Emilio Nava.
- Both Svajda and Barton competed as wild cards in the singles qualifying rounds.
LAST YEAR'S GAUNTLET
- The Mustangs faced off with 10 ranked teams in the 2024 regular season.
- SMU defeated No. 57 Cornell (5-2), No. 34 Middle Tennessee (4-1), and swept No. 27 Memphis (4-0).
- Four of SMU's ranked opponents were spotted inside the top 15 (No. 2 TCU, No. 7 USC, No. 12 San Diego, No. 14 Texas A&M).
