DALLAS (SMU) -Â SMU women's tennis will host No. 1 Virginia on Friday and No. 31 Virginia Tech on Sunday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex as they continue a six-match homestand. The Mustangs ride a two-match winning streak into the weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
- SMU women's tennis went a perfect 2-0 Sunday afternoon in their doubleheader, taking down Louisville for their first ACC win 4-1 and defeating Incarnate Word 4-0 in the second match.
- The two wins pushed the Mustangs to 7-5 on the year and 1-1 in their inaugural ACC season. SMU improved their series lead over Louisville to 6-1 and is now 2-0 against Incarnate Word.
SERIES HISTORY
- SMU won the only matchup against the Cavaliers with a 5-2 win on March 9, 2004.
- Virginia Tech took the lone matchup against the Mustangs 5-1 on April 5, 1998.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
- This week, Virginia reached the No. 1 in the ITA rankings for the first time in program history.
- The Cavaliers (10-2, 2-0 ACC) moved from No. 2 last week to No. 1 after starting ACC play 2-0 with wins over then-No.19 Clemson and Georgia Tech.
- Earlier this month, the Cavaliers reached the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championship semifinals for the first time in program history.
- Seniors Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard won the 2024-25 NCAA Doubles Championship in the fall, becoming the first Cavaliers to win the NCAA Doubles title.
- Last season, the Cavaliers went 25-5, 12-1 in the ACC, falling in the NCAA Quarterfinals to eventual champion Texas A&M.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
- After claiming their highest ranking ever at No. 27 last week in the ITA College Tennis Rankings, the Hokies dropped their matchups last week to No. 33 Georgia Tech (4-1) and then No. 19 Clemson (4-0).
- The Hokies are 9-3 on the season, with just SMU scheduled for this weekend.
- Last year, Virginia Tech finished the dual season 9-13, 3-10 in the ACC.
UPDATED ITA RANKINGS
- The Cavaliers doubles pairing Chervinsky and Collard are ranked No. 1 in the ITA Doubles Rankings with a perfect 7-0 record in dual matches and a 24-1 overall record on the season. Two other pairings, Martina Genis/Salas Annabella Xu and Sara Ziodato and Margaret Navarro, are ranked inside the top 40.
- Virginia also has five players ranked in the ITA Singles Rankings, which is tied for the most in the country.
