Mustangs Fall To NC State In Regular Season Finale

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team closed out the regular season falling 69-45 to No. 9/10 NC State on Thursday inside Moody Coliseum.

After a slow start, SMU rallied in the second quarter as Zanai Jones and Kylie Marshall did everything in their power to keep the game close. However, the Wolfpack pulled away in the second half and clinched the ACC regular-season title with the victory.

The Mustangs shot 33% from the floor and forced 15 NC State turnovers, while the Wolfpack finished the game shooting 44% from the field and made seven three-pointers.

In her final collegiate basketball game, Zanai Jones led SMU with 17 points and five assists. It was her 14th game this season with five or more assists. She scored eight of her 17 points in the second quarter, helping SMU outscore NC State 16-12 in the period.

Kylie Marshall finished the game with 13 points and made a pair of three-pointers. It was her fourth career game scoring double figures.

Jessica Peterson recorded 10 rebounds and eight points. She ended the season with a program-record total of 360 rebounds and is now the third Mustang in school history to average a double-double for the entire season.

Peterson initially broke the single-season rebounding record on the road at Boston College.

NC State got started fast and pushed its lead to double digits halfway through the first quarter. The Wolfpack led 15-2 after a 10-0 run. Jones scored seven of SMU's nine points in the quarter, including hitting a step-back three-pointer.

SMU came out hot in the second quarter and began the period on a 9-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Marshall and Jones. The Mustangs outscored the Wolfpack 16-12 in the quarter as Marshall led the team with eight points in the frame.

Jones led SMU with 11 points while Marshall added eight in the first half as the Mustangs trailed 36-25 at the break. NC State shot 52% from the floor and had 11 assists in the half.

The Wolfpack opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run, continuing to increase their lead. SMU responded with 8-0 run as Peterson and Jones each had four, yet NC State still led by 17.

SMU continued to fight but were unable to cut into the lead as NC State kept the Mustangs at a distance and held on for the win.
