NORTHBROOK, Ill. (SMU) – SMU Football's
Alexander Kilgore was named to the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Tuesday in a release by the Wuerffel Foundation and Allstate.
For the second year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to align two of college football's most meaningful honors: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Together, they recognize student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in community service, academics and athletics.
The Texas native has played in every game of the last two seasons while making seven starts on the defense. An incoming junior, Kilgore has registered 92 total tackles (45 solo tackles, 27 tackle assists), during his collegiate career.
Kilgore served as a key member of the Mustang linebacker core that helped advance the program to its first CFP berth, along with an undefeated mark in the first season in the ACC.
The unit helped the Mustangs defense be elite in all three facets during the 2024 season, ranking in the top 25 in the FBS in multiple different categories including: defensive touchdowns (5th, 4), rushing defense (7th, 100.2), team sacks (10th, 3.07), fourth down conversion pct. defense (17th, .415), tackles for loss (18th, 7.1), third down conversion pct. defense (19th, .332) and red zone defense (24th, .767).
Impactful in the community, Kilgore volunteered to coach youth football camps with local kids in the Dallas area as well as spend time with patients at the Children's Health Hospital. While continuing to excel on the field, he earned the ACC Top Six for Service Award which recognizes the top six student-athletes for community service during the 2024-25 academic year.
The final roster of 23 award recipients will be announced in September. The finalists will consist of 11 players from the NCAA FBS, 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and one honorary head coach.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, a member of the National College Football Awards Association, is college football's premier award for community service. The trophy is presented annually by the Wuerffel Foundation to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field. Named after Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer, Danny Wuerffel, the award honors his commitment to inspiring greater service and unity in the world. Established in 2005, the Wuerffel Trophy is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year. Wuerffel led the University of Florida to four SEC Championships and the 1996 National Championship. As a humanitarian, he continues to inspire leaders to positively impact their communities.
