Mustangs Draw Syracuse 1-1 In ACC Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SMU women's soccer program drew Syracuse 1-1 on the road on Thursday in the team's ACC opener.

Despite double-digit shot totals from both teams, defense was the story of the game. SMU (5-2-1, 0-0-1) played hard for the full 90 minutes and generated quality scoring opportunities down the stretch and ended the night with 11 shots and goalkeeper Aubrey Brown led the way on defense, finishing the match with a career high seven saves.

Syracuse (4-1-4, 0-0-1) matched the Mustangs' physicality, especially in the second half, as the Orange rattled off 8 of their 13 total shots.

Both teams started slow, feeling each other out, but it was SMU who took control of the game first as Lydia Ungashick netted her third goal of the season to put SMU up 1-0 in the 37th minute.

Nyah Rose sent a rocket towards the net that was saved, but it was Ungashick who was there to gather the rebound and give the Mustangs the lead. She has now scored in back-to-back games and leads the team in goals this season.

The Orange were quick to respond as Syracuse's Vita Naihin answered Ungashick's goal in the 43rd minute and the match headed to the half deadlocked at 1-1.

The offensive intensity for both teams picked up in the second half, as the Mustangs and the Orange traded shots early, but the defenses stood tall.

In the 70th minute, SMU had a golden chance to take back the lead as Ungashick drew a foul just outside the 18' and was awarded a free kick. Ungashick sent a ball on net but right into the hands of the Shea Vanderbosch.

On the following Syracuse possession, Brown saved a back-to-back shot to keep the match even.  Down the stretch of the game, Sydney Japic and Hali Hartman did their part in keeping Syracuse from scoring by blocking multiple shots.

Nyah Rose, who led the Mustangs in shots with four, made one last run late, but it was sent away by the Orange defense.

SMU earned two free kicks over the final five minutes, but just couldn't turn them into goals, and leaves Syracuse with a point in the conference standings.
