DALLAS (SMU)— The SMU women's soccer program celebrated senior day with a 1-0 shutout win over Alcorn State on Sunday inside Washburne Stadium.
SMU (6-2-1, 0-0-1 ACC) earned its fourth shutout victory of the season. Goalkeeper
Haven Empey-Taylor finished the game with a career high four saves on seven shots from Alcorn State (1-4-2, 0-0-0 SWAC).
The Mustangs improved to 5-0-0 at home this season, which includes all of the teams four shutouts this season. SMU has outscored its opponents 11-1 at home and outshot them 113-27.
With heat playing a factor in the match, the Mustangs prioritized ball control, possessing the ball for 60% of the match. The game started slowly as both teams were getting a feel for the conditions, but the Mustangs broke the scoreless tie in the 44th minute as freshman
Brooke Bunton found the back of the net.
After
Jen Jackson poked a ball away from a Lady Brave defender, Bunton drove straight into the box, dribbling past two defenders and sent a shot into the lower left corner. It was the freshman's first career goal and is now the 11
th different Mustang to score a goal this season.
The Mustangs controlled the pace of play in the second half as Empey-Taylor,
Hali Hartman,
Sydney Japic,
Maura Yumul, and the rest of the SMU defensive unit did their part to deny any opportunity Alcorn State had and cruised to the 1-0 victory.
At the end of the match, the team recognized 10 seniors for their contributions to the program:
Kaya Lee,
Mayu Inokawa,
Hali Hartman,
Sammy Nieves,
Sydney Japic,
Paige Boeger,
Maura Yumul,
Jen Jackson,
Haven Empey-Taylor and student manager
