DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis topples No. 22 Arizona State 4-2 at the ITA National Indoor Championship at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Saturday.
 
Jerry Barton clinched the match winner on court five with a 7-6(9), 6-3, improving his singles record to 7-1 this season.
 
The Mustangs were dominant from the start of the match, winning the doubles point from courts two and one consecutively. Georgi Georgiev and Vikas Deo won their doubles match 6-0 on court two, before Trevor Svajda and Alex Finkelstein clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court one minutes after.
 
Despite dropping points on courts four and six of singles play, the Mustangs' dominant straight set wins from Svajda, Georgiev and Barton clinched them the ranked win.
 
Svajda remains undefeated in singles play this spring. He has a 7-0 record, including wins over three ranked singles players, and has not dropped a single set.
 
The win is the Mustangs' highest-ranked win since they beat No. 21 Cornell in 2023. It is also the Mustangs' first ITA National Indoor Championship match win since 2000.
 
How it Went
SMU came out blazing, clinching the doubles point within a half-hour.
 
Georgi Georgiev and Vikas Deo won their match on court two with a 6-0 bagel against Ofek Shimanov and Bor Artnak.
 
Trevor Svajda and Alex Finkelstein clinched the first point of the day with a 6-1 win on court one.
 
The Sun Devils tied the scoreboard by winning court six (6-2, 6-1), but Svajda took back the lead swiftly for SMU following his doubles win. The junior won his match against Artnak 6-2, 6-2 on court one.
 
The visitors tied it again as Shu Matsuoka defeated Krish Arora (6-3, 6-3) on court four, but Georgiev did not let the Mustangs trail for too long. He won his court three match against Mathis Bondaz (6-2, 6-3).
 
After a first-set tiebreaker win that saw four deuce points, Jerry Barton grabbed a convincing victory in the second set over Nilels Villards (7-6(9), 6-3) to win the match for SMU.
