HUMBLE, Texas (SMU) – SMU women's golf sits in a tie for third place after an impressive two-round day at the Chevron Collegiate.
"After a tough start this morning, we kept believing that if we stayed patient and hung tough, we could turn it around in the afternoon and that's exactly what they did." said head coach Lauren Mason. "Outstanding rounds from Kirra (St-Laurent) and Celine (Chen) helped move us up the leaderboard and gave us great momentum heading into the final round. Looking forward to seeing what this group can bring tomorrow."
Facing a strong field of 10 ranked teams, the 31
st-ranked Mustangs carded two-over par in the first round to hold fourth place after 18 holes per player. The team improved on that spot after a stronger round two that saw the Mustangs shoot 10-under. The Mustangs sit ahead of six ranked teams including No. 6 Arkansas. SMU is two shots out of second place and seven shots out of first. On the day, the Mustangs were the second-best team on the par fives playing them 17-under.
Three Mustangs are tied in 11
th place.
Mackenzie Lee eagled the par five 485-yard fourth hole in her first round. She went on to card a 70 during round one. She shot even par in round two to end the day in 11th. The North Little Rock native was a tournament best seven under on the par fives. Lee is in pursuit of her program-record 23
rd top 10.
Emily Odwin shares 11
th. She carded back to back rounds of 71. Odwin recorded just two bogeys in 36 holes. The Barbados native will try for her 11
th top 10 on Tuesday.
Tied with Lee and Odwin,
Celine Chen is at two-under par after shooting a 74 in round one. She came back with a 68 in round two to move up 32 spots . Chen will be in search of her sixth top 10 showing of her career.
Freshman
Kirra St-Laurent sits in a tie for 19th place. She carded a 76 in the first round before an impressive second round. She shot a 67 in round two to move up 42 spots on the leaderboard. St-Laurent had just one bogey in her second round to go along with six birdies.
Grace Jin shot two rounds of 75 to hold a share of 59
th. Competing as an individual,
Yoonjeong Huh carded rounds of 82 and 83 to sit in 89
th.
The Mustangs return the course for another shotgun start on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament.
