DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis junior
Trevor Svajda was ranked No. 1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Singles Rankings announced by the association on Wednesday.
This is the junior's first career top-ranking, as he became the first Mustang to be ranked No. 1 since Genius Chidzikwe in 2000.
Svajda was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, after resuming his dominant streak by winning both of his singles matches in straight sets on the weekend. He defeated TCU's No. 6 Duncan Chan (6-4, 6-1) on Saturday before claiming victory over Tulsa's Nikita Volonski (6-1, 6-2) on Sunday.
The California native has won all five of his singles matches this spring. He has not dropped a single set in all five matches.
Svajda has two ranked wins to start the spring season. Aside from Chan, he has a win over Mississippi State's No. 54 Benito Sanchez Martinez (6-2, 6-3) in the season opener.
In the fall, Svajda finished runner-up at the NCAA Singles Championship, becoming the first Mustang to do so since Richey Reneberg in 1986.
Svajda is set to take on the Dallas Open at The Star in Frisco next week. The junior earned an invite to the main draw of the ATP 500 tournament. Draws will be announced on Friday.
The Mustangs await draws for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. They will host the tournament from Feb. 13-17.
