Mustangs Topple No. 8 Baylor In Waco

WACO, Texas (SMU) – No. 36 SMU Men's Tennis won 4-2 against No. 8 Baylor at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Complex in Waco, Texas, on Tuesday.
 
The Mustangs took the first point of the day by winning courts one and two of doubles play. Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton clinched the doubles point by winning court two in a tiebreaker.
 
The Bears scored two points from courts three and two with straight-set wins, but the Mustangs responded with wins from Krish Arora, Noah McDonald and Trevor Svajda to clinch the win.
 
The win is SMU's first win against Baylor since 2001, first win in Waco against Baylor since 1996.
 
Taking down the No. 8 Bears marked the Mustangs' highest-ranked win since they beat No. 4 TCU in 2001.
 
Svajda and Barton are undefeated with a 7-0 record as a doubles pair this spring.
 
Svajda improved his singles record to 13-1. He defeated No. 12 Devin Bradenhorst to earn his second-highest-ranked singles win of the season.
 
McDonald is now 9-5 in singles play, while Arora improved his record to 9-6.
 
This win is SMU's second top-25 win of the season. The Mustangs took down No. 22 Arizona State 4-2 earlier this season.
 
The Mustangs are now 13-6 overall.
 
How it Went
SMU took the first point of the day in a doubles battle that saw a tiebreaker clincher.
 
Krish Arora and Alex Finkelstein won a dominant 6-1 match over Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz.
 
The hosts responded by winning court three (6-3) but Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton clinched the match from court two with a tiebreaker win over Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk (7-6(3)).
 
Baylor tied it up by winning the first singles point of the match. No. 27 Connor Van Schalkwyk defeated Georgi Georgiev (6-0, 6-3).
 
The Bears' No. 53 Zsombor Velcz defeated No. 107 Alex Finkelstein 6-1, 6-4 on court two to take the lead.
 
Arora tied the scoreboard at 2-2 by winning his match on court five against Luc Koenig (1-6, 6-3, 6-3).
 
Noah McDonald took back the lead for the Mustangs at 3-2, winning his court six match against Louis Bowden (3-6, 6-3, 6-0).
 
Svajda and Barton fought to reach match points on courts one and four, respectively. But it was the second-ranked Svajda who took the honors of clinching the match by defeating No. 12 Badenhorst in a tiebreaker third set (3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6)).
 
The Mustangs clinched the match at 4-2 in Waco.
