STANFORD, Calif. (SMU) – No. 36 SMU Men's Tennis fell 4-3 at No. 24 Stanford on Friday night.
The Mustangs dropped the doubles point before going three-for-three with the Cardinal to fall short in California.
SMU's three singles points came from
Georgi Georgiev,
Trevor Svajda and
Alex Finkelstein.
Georgiev earned his highest-ranked singles win of the season over No. 58 Hudson Rivera (6-4, 6-4). He improved his singles record to 11-3 with four ranked wins this season.
Second-ranked Svajda posted his 14
th singles win of the season, nabbing his fifth win in a row.
Finkelstein earned his second ranked win of the season against No. 112 Alex Chang. He defeated Ohio State's No. 22 Preston Stearns earlier this season.
The Mustangs are 3-2 in ACC play as they prepare to face No. 53 Cal on Sunday.
How it Went
SMU dropped the first point of the day as the Cardinal won courts two and one of doubles play.
The hosts extended the lead by winning court four of singles play as Alex Razeghi defeated
Jerry Barton (6-3, 6-3).
In a tight singles duel where four matches went to the third set,
Georgi Georgiev reduced SMU's deficit by winning his match on court three in straight sets. He defeated No. 58 Hudson Rivera (6-4, 6-4) for his highest-ranked win of the season.
The Cardinal made it 3-1 as Jagger Leach defeated
Krish Arora on court five (4-6, 7-5, 6-2).
Trevor Svajda and
Alex Finkelstein displayed a dominant third set to tie the scoreline at 3-3. Svajda defeated Samir Banerjee (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) on court one seconds before Finkelstein took down No. 112 Alex Chang (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) on court two.
Stanford's Nico Godsick clinched the match for the hosts by defeating
Noah McDonald on court six (6-3, 4-6, 6-4). Mustangs fell 4-3.
