BERKELEY, Calif. (SMU) – No. 36 SMU Men's Tennis won 4-3 at No. 53 Cal on Sunday.
The Mustangs took the early lead by winning the doubles point before splitting the six singles matches to edge the Golden Bears 4-3.
Singles wins from
Alex Finkelstein,
Trevor Svajda and
Georgi Georgiev earned the Mustangs' fourth conference win of the season. Georgiev clinched SMU's win on court three in the third set.
The win is SMU's first win at Cal since 2004, when they beat the Golden Bears 4-3.
Barton and Svajda won their eighth doubles match as a pair, improving their record to 8-1 this season. Georgiev and Deo clinched the doubles point and are now 8-2 in doubles play.
Finkelstein went 2-0 on the Mustangs' weekend in California. Finkelstein improved his singles record to 7-8 by winning on court two.
Svajda extended his winning streak to six matches in a row. He is now 15-1 in singles play this season.
Georgiev also went 2-0 in California following his singles win at Stanford. He is now 12-3 in singles play this season.
The Mustangs are 4-2 in ACC play as they prepare to face No. 66 Miami at home on Friday. They are 14-7 overall, going into a two-week home stretch.
How it Went
SMU was dominant on courts two and three of doubles play to win the first point of the day.
Trevor Svajda and
Jerry Barton defeated Alex Aney and Tiago Silva (6-2) on court two, but Cal's pair of Timofey Stepanov and F Lechno-Wasiutyski won their match against
Alex Finkelstein and
Krish Arora (6-2) after.
Vikas Deo and
Georgi Georgiev clinched the point for SMU with a convincing 6-2 win on court three against Bernardo Munk Mesa and Paris Pouatcha.
The hosts took the first singles point as Bernardo Munk Mesa defeated
Jerry Barton on court four (6-1, 6-3).
Finkelstein grabbed back the lead for SMU by defeating Tiago Silva (6-2, 6-4) on court two.
The Bears equalized again at 2-2, Paris Pouatcha won against
Krish Arora on court five (7-5, 6-1).
No. 2 Svajda made it 3-2 by defeating F Lechno-Wasiutyski (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) on court one, but Cal responded again as Lenn Luemkemann defeated
Noah McDonald (6-3, 7-5).
Georgiev clinched the match in a tight three-set battle against Timofey Stepanov (6-4, 5-7, 7-5) on court three to win the match for SMU.
