SMU earned a No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region when the pairings for this season's NCAA Tournament were announced on Sunday. The Mustangs will play Miami (OH) (31-1) in the First Four on Wednesday at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

SMU (20-13) is making its 13th appearance in the tournament and first since 2017. This is the first at-large selection for the Mustangs since 1993 as the program earned automatic bids in 2015 and 2017.

SMU is in the second season under Head Coach Andy Enfield, who is leading his third program to the NCAA Tournament. SMU recorded a pair of ranked wins over [12/12] North Carolina on Jan. 3 (97-83) and [21/21] Louisville on Feb. 17 (95-85). The program at least received votes in the AP or USA Today Coaches Poll in nine weeks and was No. 24 in the AP Top 25 and No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Jan. 5. That was the first time the Mustangs were ranked since the final poll of the 2016-17 season.

SMU has five players averaging double figures in scoring: Boopie Miller (19.2, 5th ACC, 50th NCAA), Jaron Pierre Jr. (17.6, 8th ACC), B.J. Edwards (12.7, 31st ACC), Corey Washington (11.3, 45th ACC) and Samet Yigitoglu (10.8, 50th ACC). SMU has had at least four double-figure scorers in 27 of 33 games and at least five in double figures nine times. (Through March 15, SMU was one of 30 teams with five averaging 10+ points.) Six Mustangs have recorded at least one double-double this season: Samet Yigitoglu (7, 7th ACC), Boopie Miller (5, 11th ACC), Corey Washington (3, 19th ACC), B.J. Edwards (2 - both triple-doubles), Jaden Toombs (2) and Jaron Pierre Jr. (1). Edwards is one of three players in the nation with multiple triple-doubles.

Yigitoglu is leading the Mustangs in blocks (1.3, 9th ACC), rebounds (7.9, 8th ACC, 84th NCAA) and offensive rebounds (3.6, 1st ACC, 17th NCAA). Boopie Miller leads in assists (6.4, 2nd ACC, 15th NCAA) with a 2.45 assist-to-turnover ratio (6th ACC, 81st NCAA) and is second on the team in steals (1.5, 11th ACC). B.J. Edwards is averaging 4.9 assists (7th ACC, 65th NCAA), 5.9 rebounds (19th ACC) and 2.3 steals (1st ACC, 12th NCAA) with a 2.56 assist-to-turnover ratio (5th ACC, 68th NCAA). From three-point range, Corey Washington 39.8% (45-113), Jermaine O'Neal Jr. 37.7% (23-61), Boopie Miller 41.0% (64-156), B.J. Edwards 37.2% (42-113) and Jaron Pierre Jr. 37.8% (79-209). The Mustangs are near the top of the ACC in scoring offense (84.2, 2nd ACC, 23rd NCAA), assists (16.9, 3rd ACC, 31st NCAA), field-goal percentage (49.0%, 2nd ACC, 24th NCAA), 3-point percentage (37.4%, 2nd ACC, 24th NCAA) and free-throw percentage (74.1%, 6th ACC).

B.J. Edwards missed the last three games of the regular season and the ACC Tournament due to an injury. The Mustangs are 17-8 this season (8-6 ACC) with the starting lineup of Edwards, Boopie Miller, Jaron Pierre Jr., Corey Washington and Samet Yigitoglu.

ENFIELD IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: Head coach Andy Enfield has a 7-6 record in six previous NCAA Tournament trips. He was 2-1 at Florida Gulf Coast in 2013, making a run to the Sweet 16. His Southern California teams made five NCAAs, including a run to the 2021 Elite Eight.

SMU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: This is SMU's 13th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and first since 2017. The Mustangs are 10-14 in the event, advancing to the 1956 Final Four and the 1967 Midwest Region final.

He also had a pair of game-winning shots, including a right-wing 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in a 54-52 win at Virginia. He was the Acrisure Holiday Invitational MVP after SMU defeated Washington State in the championship.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE (11-2): SMU went 11-2 in non-conference, the most regular-season wins outside league play since 2015-16 (12-0). The Mustangs had nine non-conference home games, including a home game with Butler on Nov. 15 (W, 87-85). SMU also faced four SEC teams beginning with a visit to Mississippi State on Nov. 28 (W, 87-81 ot) and then [17/16] Vanderbilt in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 3 (L, 88-69). Texas A&M was next in the Hoop Hype XL matchup at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 7 (W, 93-80 ot) followed by the Compete 4 Cause Classic versus [rv/rv] LSU in New Orleans on Dec. 13 (L, 89-77).

ACC TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND (W, 86-69 vs Syracuse on March 10): CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Boopie Miller scored 25 points to lead five starters in double figures, Jaden Toombs and Samet Yigitoglu each had a double-double and No. 11 seed SMU beat 14th-seeded Syracuse 86-69 on Tuesday in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. Toombs had a double-double in the first half with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Miller added 11 points to help SMU hold a 39-38 lead at the break. Nate Kingz paced Syracuse with 17 points. SMU pulled away midway through the second half when Jaron Pierre Jr. made three straight 3-pointers during a 13-0 run that ended in a 69-48 lead with 8:41 remaining. Pierre's fifth 3-pointer of the second half made it 79-66. Pierre finished with 21 points for SMU. Toombs had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, Yigitoglu had 12 points and 11 boards, and Corey Washington also scored 12. The Mustang reserves only attempted two shots. Kingz led Syracuse with 25 points and Tyler Betsey added 15. The Orange shot 9 of 34 from distance (26%).

ACC TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND (L, 62-58 vs [24/24] Louisville on March 11): CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Ryan Conwell hit two key shots in the final 1:17 and finished with 16 points as No. 24 Louisville battled back to beat SMU 62-58 on Wednesday. Adrian Wooley added 14 points and Isaac McKneely had 10 for the Cardinals, who'll face Miami on Thursday. Jarron Pierre Jr. had 17 points and Jaden Toombs added 13 points and nine rebounds for SMU, which led by six in the second half before Louisville stormed back behind three inside baskets from Vangelis Zougris. After a defensive struggle in the first half ended in a 26-all tie, SMU built its biggest lead at 41-35 on back-to-back 3s by Sam Walters and Pierre from the same spot in right corner. The Mustangs, playing their second game in two days, appeared content to patiently work time off the shot clock, extending every possession and shortening the game. But Louisville worked its way back after SMU's 7-foot-1 rim protector Samet Yigitoglu picked up his fourth foul with 7:51 left and was forced to the bench. That freed up Zougris to work in the middle, where he scored three key baskets in a two-minute stretch. Yigitoglu returned with the game tied at 56 and three minutes left and Pierre briefly put the Mustangs ahead with a driving layup. But after SMU's Corey Washington went down with a shoulder injury, Conwell took over. He hit a 3 to give the Cardinals the lead for good at 60-58 with 1:17 left. SMU's Boopie Miller missed a 3 at the other end and Conwell drove the left side of lane and scored on a left-handed layup with 29.4 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.

THE SERIES VS. MIAMI OH (2-0): SMU and Miami (OH) are meeting for the third time. The first was in the 1984 NCAA Tournament as the Mustangs won 83-69 in Pullman, Washington, in the first round. COACHES VS CANCER (Jan. 26-Feb. 1): Coaches vs. Cancer Suits And Sneakers Week is a nationwide event when basketball coaches across the country unite for a common cause – saving lives from cancer! To raise awareness and bring attention to the cause during this week, we are asking coaches to return to suiting up during their games – and of course, wear their most eye-catching sneakers. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised over $179 million for the American Cancer Society.

COACHES IN YEAR 2 (HIGH-MAJOR): SMU is 44-24 (.647) in the two seasons under Head Coach Andy Enfield. That is the sixth-highest winning percentage among coaches the second season at a high-major program.

HEAD COACH ANDY ENFIELD... is in his second season at SMU after being named SMU's Head Men's Basketball on April 1, 2024. In his first season on the Hilltop, he led the Mustangs to a 24-11 overall record and earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Mustangs went 13-7 in the program's inaugural season in the ACC to tie for fourth. SMU signed the nation's fourth-ranked high school recruiting class, which is the best in program history.

Enfield burst onto the coaching scene in 2013 when, in his second year as a head coach, he guided Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following that success, he was hired by the Southern California (USC), where he led the Trojans to five NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021. He came to SMU after 11 seasons at USC, where he compiled a 220-147 record. The Trojans set a school single-season win record and posted the most wins in program history over two-year, three-year, four-year, five-year, six-year, seven-year and eight-year periods. Enfield's 220 wins ranks third on USC's all-time wins list.

Over his final seven seasons at USC, the Trojans had eight players selected in the NBA Draft, tied for the fifth-most by any program in the country, with Evan Mobley going No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft and Onyeka Okongwu being selected No. 6 in the 2020 Draft. USC was one of three teams to have had at least one player selected in six of the last seven NBA Drafts. In total, 11 players during Enfield's time at USC have made the NBA.
