DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis Head Coach
Grant Chen announces the signing of Jacob Hewitt to the 2026 fall roster.
The San Antonio native is currently ranked 59th nationally and third in the Mid-Atlantic Section by the USTA. He has previously climbed as high as 11th in the USTA national rankings and claimed a Silver Ball in doubles at the USTA National Indoor Championships.
"We are thrilled to announce that Jacob Hewitt will be joining the SMU tennis family starting in August 2026. Jacob represents and embodies all the values and characteristics of what we are looking for in a Mustang," said Head Coach
Grant Chen.
"He has strong ties to the state of Texas, having grown up in San Antonio, and values his education. We can't wait to have Jacob on The Hilltop."
Hewitt has a career-high ranking of 641 in the International Tennis Federation and has won the ITF J30 tournament in Dallas. He joins SMU as the No. 84-ranked recruit in the country.
"Some of my favorite memories as a junior player are competing in team formats and representing the Mid-Atlantic section at Battle of the Sections or playing the Brewer Cup," said Hewitt.
"This is another reason I'm looking forward to playing at the collegiate level and being part of a team."
Hewitt is the son of Air Force officer, Brigadier General Jim Hewitt, who has given him the opportunity to live throughout the country. When the family moved to a new location, Jacob made new friends by playing many sports, but by age 11, after relocating to San Antonio, Texas, he focused on tennis and decided to make it his full-time sport. Despite living all over the country, he has always felt most at home in Texas and is thrilled to return to begin his collegiate career at SMU.
"From the first time I visited SMU, the team made me feel like part of the family," said Hewitt. "I'm excited about becoming a Mustang and contributing to the rich tradition of SMU."
Hewitt started his training at the Shavano Park Tennis Club and the San Antonio Tennis Academy. He currently trains at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland, which has produced players such as current world No. 28 Frances Tiafoe, 2021 US Open Girls' champion Robin Montgomery, and ATP pros Denis Kudla and Hailey Baptiste.
