DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis won 4-1 against No. 43 Duke in its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Friday.
 
The Mustangs grabbed wins on courts two and three in doubles play and won courts one, three and six in singles play to win the match.
 
Trevor Svajda improved to 11-1 in singles play while Georgi Georgiev improved to 9-2. Georgiev is undefeated in his last eight matches.
 
Noah McDonald won his second match clincher of the season. He improved his singles record to 7-4 and has won three consecutive matches.
 
Svajda and Jerry Barton are undefeated as a doubles pair this season with a 3-0 record.
 
Georgiev and Vikas Deo improved to 6-1 as a doubles pair this season. They have won five consecutive matches and are undefeated in seven matches in a row.
 
The win is SMU's first win against Duke after the two teams' three meetings. SMU improved to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in ACC play.
 
How it Went
SMU has a slight edge from the start of the match. Despite losing line one of doubles play 6-1, the Mustangs showed dominant wins on courts two and three to win the first point.
 
Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton defeated Planelles Ripoll and Dylan Long (6-4) on court two before Vikas Deo and Georgi Georgiev clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Teddy Tuwitt and Alexander Ripoll on court three.
 
Alex Finkelstein dropped his match on court two to No. 62 Cooper Williams (6-2, 6-2) but Georgiev responded quickly to grab back SMU's lead.
 
Georgiev won his match against No. 123 Planelles Ripoll with a second-set bagel (6-1, 6-0). The win is Georgiev's first ranked singles win of the season.
 
Svajda makes it 3-1 for the Mustangs with a win over No. 103 Pedro Rodenas (6-4, 6-1) on court one before Noah McDonald clinched the win on court six by defeating Saahith Jayaraman on court six (6-1, 6-2).
