SMU Men’s Tennis Signs Top-Ranked Midwest Prospect In Avner Wong

DALLAS — SMU Men's Tennis announces the signing of Avner Wong, a five-star recruit from Indiana/Florida who will join the Mustangs program in the Fall of 2026.

Wong arrives as the No. 1-ranked player in Indiana and No. 37 in the nation for the Class of 2026, according to Tennis Recruiting, carrying a 12.4 UTR. He also holds a 350 ITF ranking — after starting his ITF circuit at age 18.

"Avner possesses the rare trifecta as a hard-working individual who values excellence on the tennis court and in the classroom," said Head Coach Grant Chen.

"He comes from a wonderful and supportive family. Avner and the Wong family will seamlessly fit into The Hilltop. He has extensive experience in the USA but has also been competing overseas over the past two years. Look forward to his arrival in August."

A racquet in hand since the age of four, Wong consistently ranks in the top 10 regionally and top 20 nationally, always a blue-chip/5-star recruit.

Throughout his junior career, he earned multiple USTA Level two and Level three titles in both singles and doubles and was a fixture at the sport's most prestigious junior national tournaments, including Kalamazoo, National Clay Courts and Eddie Herr International.

The Indianapolis native's competitive excellence was matched by his character on court, earning him numerous sportsmanship awards along the way.

Wong's development has been shaped by an extensive international journey. For the past two years, he has trained and competed across 11 countries under ATP coach Daniel Yoo, who helped coach who also coached ATP No. 52-ranked Korean player Soonwoo Kwon.

Under Coach Yoo's leadership, Wong has been provided opportunities, including serving as a training partner for professional players in Korea and throughout Asia.

In August 2025, he made his first professional main draw appearance at the ITF M25 level and continues to compete on the Futures circuit in preparation for his collegiate career.

Off the court, Wong is a recent graduate of ICL Academy with a 4.1 GPA. He plans to pursue a degree in Sports Management at SMU with long-term aspirations of earning an MBA.

"I chose SMU because of the coaching staff's unwavering commitment to helping me grow as a player, and the incredible resources and top-tier training facilities. I believe SMU is the perfect place to take my game to the next level," said Wong.
