Svajda, Barton Earn ITA Regional Awards

TEMPE, Ariz. (ITA/SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis's Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton earned ITA Regional Awards as announced by the organization on Tuesday. Svajda was named Player to Watch while Barton earned the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award.

Svajda was named Regional Player to Watch following a decorated 2025-26 season. He earned two All-America honors after reaching the NCAA Singles Championship round of 16 and being ranked No. 4 in the final ITA singles rankings.

The California native was ranked No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings four times this season. He stayed in the top five of the rankings all spring, with a 21-3 singles record in dual play—including nine ranked wins.

This award adds to Svajda's multiple awards in the 2025-26 season. He won two All-America honors, was named the UTR Hurd Award Finalist, All-ACC First Team Singles and is a three-time ACC Player of the Week.

The junior finished the season with a 32-6 record through the fall and spring, including 16 ranked wins. He is fourth all-time in program history in single-season singles wins with 32.

Recently, Svajda was selected to compete in the American Collegiate Player Wild Card Playoff in Orlando, Florida, on June 16-18. The winner of the four-player men's singles playoff will earn a US Open main draw singles wild card, while the finalist will earn a US Open qualifying wild card.

Barton earned the regional Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award after captaining SMU's team that won its first NCAA Championship match since 2016.

The Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award honors the player who demonstrates many of the key tenets of Osuna's game, including, but not limited to, sportsmanship, character, academic achievements, and outstanding tennis accomplishments.

Barton is the heart of SMU's team, exemplifying his philosophy of "giving back" through his leadership. He captained the Mustangs for two seasons as they transitioned to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Texas native was named to the 2024 and 2025 CSC Academic All-District Team, 2022-23 and 2024-25 ITA All-Academic Team, 2025 ACC All-Academic Team and was the 2023 SoCon Rookie of the Year.

This season, Barton was named ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 13. He went 17-7 in singles through the spring while primarily on line five and is ranked No. 56 in ITA doubles rankings with Svajda after going 14-6 as a pair.

SMU finished the season ranked No. 29 in the final ITA team rankings. This is SMU's highest team ranking since 2022.
