Nostalgia delivers an unprecedented look into SMU Spirit, from grueling tryouts to the roar of gameday
DALLAS — Mustang Partners today announced the launch of Nostalgia, a docuseries pulling back the curtain on SMU Spirit, the cheer and pom program that has grown into one of the most recognizable spirit programs in the country.
Â
Nostalgia captures the sacrifice, the heartbreak, the athleticism, and the triumphs most fans never see, introducing viewers to the coaches and athletes who pour everything into representing the Hilltop. What emerges is an intimate, unfiltered portrait of one of college athletics' most iconic groups.
"Our SMU Spirit program is about developing the whole person — their character, their calling and their commitment to excellence as athletes," said Carrie Teller, head coach of SMU Spirit. "I've always known how extraordinary our young people are in competition and in everything they do beyond it. Now everyone else gets to see it, too."
Nostalgia is the latest release from Mustang Studios, the athlete-driven media platform SMU launched in January to build original programming around its student-athletes. Nostalgia joins The 214 as the studio's first two productions, proof of Mustang Partners' bet on bold storytelling in one of the nation's largest media markets.
Â
"The students that proudly represent SMU are the heartbeat of our program," said Brian Ullmann, Executive Deputy of Athletics. "Mustang Studios was launched to tell their stories. We believe that Nostalgia will do for SMU Spirit what America's Sweethearts did for the Cowboys."
Nostalgia was produced by Nick Carroll at Nash Entertainment, LLC.
"This film is a poetic love letter to the true Spirit of SMU," said Carroll. "Being a part of the storytelling and growth of this program over the past 3 seasons has been nothing short of an honor."
SMU Spirit includes cheer, pom, the live mascot Peruna and his handlers, and SMU's costumed mascot. The program's mission is to develop confident, resilient leaders who represent the best of the Hilltop — in the classroom, in the community, and on gameday. SMU Spirit is rooted in the ambition and identity of Dallas, defined by the city it calls home.
Â
The series is proudly presented by Wellpoint, which believes physical activity in all its forms is an essential part of whole health. Through this partnership, Wellpoint is proud to celebrate the dedication, athleticism and stories of SMU Spirit's cheer and pom programs while continuing its commitment to making a meaningful impact across SMU and the Dallas community.
