DALLAS (SMU) -- The top-ranked SMU men's soccer team won its 11th straight game with a 4-2 victory over Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton Sunday afternoon by the score of 4-2 in front of 2,466 enthusiastic fans at Westcott Field under sunny skies. With the win, SMU improves to 11-0 (4-0 MVC) while Creighton drops its second consecutive game and falls to 5-6-1 on the year (2-2 MVC).
The fans barely got comfortable in their seats when Creighton struck the first blow at the 1:14 mark. Keith Sawarynski scored the Bluejays' first goal as SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss pulled out of the goal to stop the ball, but the ball squirted out as Mike Tranchilla found the rebound and passed it to Sawarynski who found an open net.
First-half scoring opportunities for SMU were abundant, but could not connect - SMU went into halftime down, 1-0.
In the second half, SMU came out extremely strong, forcing the ball into Creighton territory on nearly every possession. The Bluejays' defense appeared to be at the mercy of the Mustangs, but the SMU goals did not come to them easily. Senior forward Mohamed Fahim got SMU on the scoreboard at the 51:04 mark with assists credited to Luchi Gonzalez and Diego Walsh. SMU took the lead at 58:49 as Walsh blasted a one-timer off a throw-in from freshman Ugo Ihemelu. SMU increased its lead to 3-1 at 62:10 as senior Bryan Doi stole the ball deep in Creighton territory, and passed it to Gonzalez who recorded his 14th goal of the season. The Bluejays made the score 4-2 at 81:41 as Tiago Venturi scored with the assist credited to Mike Tranchilla. The play looked as though Creighton was offsides. SMU, waiting for the referee whistle, relaxed and allowed the Creighton goal. At 83:29, SMU scored its fourth goal of the day as Fahim was fouled in the Creighton box and Diego Walsh connected on the Mustang penalty kick.
The contest was fiercely physical, as 42 fouls and four yellow cards were assessed.
The Mustangs continue conference play this coming weekend with a road game in Tulsa on Saturday, October 20. Game time is slated for 7:35 p.m.
