The SMU men's tennis team continues to add to arguably the most successful season ever in SMU tennis history as the Mustangs' dynamic doubles team of Jon Wallmark and Johan Brunstrom has advanced to the elite eight of the NCAA Doubles Championships in Athens, Ga.
The SMU tandem defeated LSU's Daniel Kiernan and Sebastian Rutka in an impressive straight set performance Saturday morning, 6-1, 7-6. With the win, Wallmark and Brunstrom improve to 23-4 on the year and will face the winner of the Jorge Duenas/Harsh Mankad (Minnesota) and Florian Marquardt/Frank Moser (VCU) match tomorrow. If victorious in the elite eight match, they will then turn around and play the semi-final match that same day for a trip to Monday's national title match-up.
Wallmark and Brunstrom are the tournament's No. 3 seed, and defeated VCU's team of Marquardt and Moser in the finals of the Rolex Indoor Tennis Championships in Dallas February, capturing the doubles title in college tennis' third leg of the grand slam. The duo now has the third most wins in a season for a doubles team in SMU history. Wallmark also now ranks second all-time for career doubles wins at SMU with 89.
