Dallas, Texas -- Jeryl Sasser became the first SMU basketball player in 16 years to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft when the Orlando Magic took him with the 22nd pick overall on Wednesday night. Sasser, a product of Kimball High School in Dallas, was the first point guard and third college senior selected in the draft.
Sasser led the Mustangs in scoring (17.0 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg) and assists (4.2) last season as SMU finished 18-12. He finished his career as the program's all-time leading scoring with 1,992 points. He also owns school career records for free throws attempted (720) and field goals attempted (1,710). Sasser finished in the top 10 in SMU annals in nine other categories.
Sasser is third SMU player to ever be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft, joining Jon Koncak (1985, Atlanta) and Jim Krebs (1957, Minneapolis). He is the first Mustang to be chosen since Terry Williams was a fifth round pick of Golden State in 1987.
