Fort Worth, Texas -- The SMU men's soccer team continued its winning ways Friday afternoon with a 6-0 shutout over previously undefeated Wisconsin as part of the TCU/adidas Men's Soccer Classic at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium on the campus of TCU. With the win, the top-ranked Mustangs improve to 5-0 while the Badgers fall to 5-1 on the season.
SMU came out of the gates a bit sluggish, having to deal with a rain-soaken field. Wisconsin tested SMU's defense in the first 15 minutes of play. The Mustangs attempted to get into an offensive flow and got more into sync as the half went on. The first goal of the game was an errant pass by a Wisconsin Badger that slipped past his own goalkeeper for an SMU own goal at the 23:38 mark. From that point on, it was all SMU.
Junior defender Toti Suarez collected his first goal of the season at 36:52 off assists from midfielder Diego Walsh and senior Luchi Gonzalez. SMU increased its lead to 3-0 as Gonzalez punched in a shot off a pass from Walsh. In the second half, Gonzalez recorded his eighth goal of the season at the 57:42 mark with a blast 20 yards out which found the corner of the Badger goal. At 71:41, SMU went up, 5-0, as freshman Adam Robertson earned his first collegiate goal with the assist credited to freshman Jake Jackson. SMU scored its sixth and final goal of the game one minute later as senior Bret Corbin connected on a penalty kick as the result of a foul on senior Bryan Doi in the box.
Senior goalkeeper Byron Foss shares the shutout with freshman goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso who saw his first collegiate action at the 72:50 mark.
The Mustangs return to the campus of TCU Sunday for a match against Memphis, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
