DALLAS (SMU) - SMU runners Karin van Rooyen and Dalibor Balgac have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI Track & Field/Cross Country Team, the organization announced Thursday, May 29.
van Rooyen, a sophomore from Ermelo, South Africa, has maintained a 3.52 GPA in Mechanical Engineering while earning All-America honors as a runner. The cross country and track star is a school record holder in the 5,000m, a multiple-time winner of WAC Athlete of the Week honors, the 2001 WAC XC & Track Newcomer of the Year and was the 2002 WAC XC Athlete of the Year.
Balgac, a junior from Kutina, Croatia, has earned a 3.35 GPA as a business major and is a two-time All-American on the track. The two-sport standout holds several school records, is a multiple-time winner of WAC Athlete of the Week honors, and is the two-time defending High Point Award Winner at the WAC Track & Field Championships.
The 2003 season continues this weekend, May 30-31, when the Ponies run in the NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Neb.
