FRANKLIN, Tenn. (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team fell victim to a big comeback by Virginia in the final round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate at the Vanderbilt Legends Club, finishing third in the 12-team tournament.
SMU, who held a two shot lead over UVA entering the final round, carded a team 294, but the Cavaliers equaled SMU's stunning second-round effort, carding a team 281 to take home the team title. Baylor also slipped past the Mustangs with a final round 285 to finish four shots lower than the `Stangs.
Will Dodson tied for third individually, shooting 73-68-72-213 to finish at 3-under. SMU's Brandon DeStefano, competing as an individual, finished tied for seventh after firing a 2-under 73-74-67-214. Colt Knost also finished under par, tying for 11th at 1-under 73-68-74-215. Scott Sikes recorded a 70-75-74-219 to stand a 3-over. Wes Homan also played as an individual and shot 5-over 76-71-74-221. Dan Kleckner (78-78-74-230) and Zeke Reyna (80-70-81-231) rounded out the SMU contingent.
The Mustangs return to the course Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at the University Club Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La.
