DALLAS (SMU) --- Devon Pearson scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the SMU Mustangs cruised to a 70-51 exhibition victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday at Moody Coliseum. It was the Mustangs first game under new head coach Matt Doherty.
The Mustangs shot 49.1 percent for the game and 58.3 percent in the second half while holding Houston Baptist to 26.2 percent on the night. Cameron Spencer went 5-for-5 from the floor for ten points while Derrick Roberts hit all three attempts, including a three-pointer, for seven points. Spencer also had four rebounds and two blocks.
Ike Ofoegbu nearly made it two Mustangs with double-doubles by adding 14 points and nine boards. Bamba Fall scored nine, collected seven caroms, and swatted two shots. Jon Killen led the Mustangs with six assists and four steals to go with his six points and five boards.
The Mustangs' season opener is on Sunday, Nov. 12, as the Mustangs face Illinois State in the Colonial Classic at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida. The Mustangs will play three games in three days, facing Illinois State, McNeese State, and host Florida State, respectively. The home-opener is against the Dayton Flyers on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.
