WAHIAWA, Oahu (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team fired final-round 273 to win the prestigious John Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course on Friday, Feb. 24. Individually, SMU's Brandon DeStefano claimed medalist honors, besting Auburn's Jay Moseley on the second playoff hole.
SMU bettered the field of Arizona, Auburn, Denver, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, New Mexico, UTEP, San Diego, San Diego State, Colorado State, Cal, San Jose State, Utah, UH Hilo, Long Beach State, Nagoya University, BYU, Nevada, Texas A&M and Hawaii. The Mustangs overcame a three-shot deficit to round two co-leader BYU on the final day, as the `Stangs shot the team low round of the day.
On the heels of back-to-back 68s in the first two rounds, DeStefano carded a 66 over the final 18 to finish at 14-under 202 for 54 holes. Colt Knost just missed a top-10 finish, taking 12th at 10-under 206 (69-66-71). Wes Homan was next up in a tie for 21st at 7-under 209 (72-66-71). Will Dodson (72-71-67) and Scott Sikes (70-71-69) tied for 25th at 210. Dodson, who was just 1-under through two rounds, showed why he is a two-time All-American on the final day, firing a 67 to help SMU overtake the Cougars.
Individually, Mustang Dan Kleckner finished tied for 79th at 219 (73-70-76)
