PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (SMU) - The men's tennis team wrapped up a tough weekend today at the San Francisco Invitational in Pebble Beach. The Mustangs were unable to overcome Minnesota as the Gophers pulled out a 4-3 win over the Mustangs. The Mustangs are 10-3 on the season.
"It was a great weekend, I thought we played very well," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "It was a little disappointing that we couldn't come out with a win - we came up short against Cal, a highly ranked team. The No. 1 singles today (against Minnesota), was a hotly contested match, unfortunately, Peter (Oredsson) was not able to pull it out. We won the doubles point against both teams this weekend and that is encouraging. Our doubles play has been very good this season."
The Mustangs started off by winning the doubles point as all three duos were victorious. Alex Skrypko and David Kuczer paired for a 8-5 win against Sion Wilkins and Andres Osorio at the No. 1 spot while the duo of Peter Oredsson and Oivind Alver defeated Adrien Debreyne and Raoul Schwark at the No. 2 position, 8-3. Federico Murgier and Henrik Soderberg defended the No. 3 spot with a 8-3 win over D.J. Geatz and Nic Edelfsen.
In singles, #114 Skrypko rallied for a win over Osorio at the No. 2 spot, 2-6,6-4,6-1. Alver dominated his opponent, Wilkins, at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-1. The highly contested match was at the No. 1 singles spot as 65 Geatz of Minnesota defeated 44 Oredsson, 6-7,6-3,6-3. #117 Edelfsen of Minnesota overtook Murgier, 6-3,6-4, at the No. 3 spot while Soderberg fell to Debreyne (MINN), 6-2, 7-5. At the No. 5 spot, Kuczer was not able to get past Schwark as he fell, 6-4, 6-3.
The Mustangs are scheduled to play again Thurs., March 23 at 2 p.m. against Cornell.
