STILLWATER, Okla. (SMU) - #19 Oklahoma St. had to fight off the #43 Mustangs today as SMU made OSU battle for their win. OSU won, 4-2, as SMU is 14-7 on the season.
Playing in hot weather conditions with the temperature in the high nineties, Alex Skrypko and David Kuczer forced #45 Daniel Byrnes and Nathan Byrnes into a tiebreaker at No. 1. OSU paired for the 9-8 win over the Mustangs. The No. 3 doubles of Juan Felipe Diaz and Ivan Puchkarov of OSU overcame Federico Murgier and Henrik Soderberg, 8-3. The No. 2 doubles was called off due to the heat.
In singles action at No. 1, #19 D. Byrnes defeated #33 Peter Oredsson, 6-3, 6-1, but the Mustangs fought back to tie the score as No. 2 and No. 6 singles were victorious. At No. 2, Skrypko cruised for a, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Bohunicky while Alver triumphed over Kotsiuk, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6.
Murgier put up a tough fight against #80 Puchkarov at No. 3, but was unable to obtain the win as he fell, 6-4, 6-3. The teams had two matches remaining as Kuczer rallied for a tiebreaker over Diaz. Kuczer was unable to hold Diaz off as he fell, 6-2, 7-6. The pair at No. 5 did not finish.
The Mustangs head to conference foe, #39 Tulsa on Friday for a 1 p.m. match. The Golden Hurricanes are 13-9 this season and coming off a, 4-3, upset by #44 Auburn a few days ago. #10 Arnau Bruges leads Tulsa at No. 1 singles while #102 Richard Soriano plays at No. 4 singles.
