AUSTIN (SMU) - SMU's Brandon DeStefano opened with a tournament-best 65 and stands in second place after two rounds of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the par-72 6,906-yard Austin Country Club.
DeStefano, whose opening-round 65 ties as the fourth-best 18 holes in SMU history, followed with a 73 on his second 18 to stand at 6-under and trails leader Oscar Alvarez (-7) of BYU by one stroke entering Tuesday's final round.
As a team, SMU sits in 13th in the 18-team field after shooting 289-302. SMU (+15) trails leader Oklahoma State (-10) by 25 shots.
Colt Knost was the only other Mustang to break par over a round on Monday, as the Pilot Point native shot 76-71 to stand tied for 38th at 147. Other SMU scorers were Wes Homan (73-80-153-T71st), Will Dodson (75-79-154-T76th) and Scott Sikes 78-79-157-T86th).
