DALLAS (SMU) - The top-ranked SMU men's soccer team dominated the visiting Centenary Gents Tuesday evening and claimed an 8-0 victory at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU posts its sixth shutout and now records a 7-0-0 mark. Centenary drops to 1-5-0 on the season.
The last time SMU scored eight goals was on Sept. 20, 2002, when SMU beat TCU by the score of 8-1 at Westcott Field.
From the opening whistle, it was all SMU, controlling the offensive pace of the game and thwarting the small number of offensive attacks by the Gents. Senior Chase Wileman opened up the Mustang scoring with a shot off a deflection at the 7:35 mark. Scott Geppert scored the next two SMU goals at the 22:06 and 32:04 mark as SMU closed out the half with a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, sophomore Richard Oliva hit a soft tapper in the box at the 47:17 mark. Three minutes later, Manuel Mariel scored on a one-timer. At the 60:14 mark, senior Jay Needham headed in a Jeff Harwell corner kick while freshman Jaime Benitez fired a 30-yard rocket which found the back of the net at the 77:04 mark. Wileman wrapped up the Mustang scoring for the night with an open-net shot at the 78:15 mark.
SMU heads to Albuquerque, N.M. for its final tournament of the non-conference season. The Mustangs face host New Mexico (2-2-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m. MT. On Sunday, SMU takes on Dayton (3-3-0), which kicks off at 10:30 a.m. MT.
