DALLAS (AP) - Morris Almond scored 29 points, including a key 3-pointer with about a minute remaining, to help lead Rice to a 63-60 victory over SMU on Saturday night.
Almond made the go-ahead basket with 1:14 remaining after SMU's Jon Killen tied the game at 60 on a free throw. The Mustangs had a chance to tie the game after Almond's 3-pointer, but Brian Epps missed a 3-pointer with one second remaining.
Ike Ofoegbu scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (13-11, 2-8). Epps and Dez Willingham each scored nine points. Devon Pearson also had nine rebounds as the Mustangs finished with a 31-25 advantage on the glass.
Lorenzo Williams added 14 points for the Owls (13-10, 7-3 Conference USA). Paulius Packevicius led the team with seven rebounds.
Rice trailed 34-28 at the break but closed the gap in the second half, hitting 57 percent from the floor. The Mustangs built the halftime edge with 52 percent shooting in the opening stanza.
