Mustangs Sweep Texas St., 7-0

DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 40 SMU women's tennis team concluded their long weekend with a sweep of Texas St., 7-0. SMU is now 5-1 on the season after going 2-1 this past weekend. The Mustangs head out on a three-match trip to Tulsa, Okla. for the coming weekend.

"I thought we did a great job coming back from a difficult loss yesterday," said head coach Lauren Longbotham. "It was a little windy and messy at times, but I think we played well."

SMU started off with dominance in the doubles competition with all positions taking wins. Jennifer Chay and Pavi Francis posted a, 8-4, win over Lainy Chafitz and Ali Gulida at No. 2 and then Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch commanded a, 8-2, win over Ashley Ellis and Andrea Giraldo at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid notched a, 8-4, win over Natalie McLeod and Sumarie Muller at No. 3.

In singles action, Reid quickly took care of Muller at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Georgina Marta played solid over Gulida, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4, giving the Mustangs the quick 3-0 lead. Rietsch defeated Giraldo, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 to clinch. Neveklovska commanded a, 6-1, 6-0, win over McLeod at No. 6 while Francis finished Chafitz, 6-4, 6-3. Bubien completed the sweep for the Mustangs at No. 1 singles as she outlasted Ellis, 2-6, 6-2, 14-12.

The Mustangs will start their road-trip against Lamar on Fri., Feb. 23, then Wichita St. on Sat., Feb. 24 and will conclude with Conference USA foe, Tulsa on Sun., Feb. 25 at 12:00 p.m. The match against Tulsa will also be the Mustangs conference season opener.
