MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (SMU) - The SMU men's team took a, 4-3, decision from No. 65 Iowa today. SMU advances to 4-2 on the season and hands Iowa their first loss as they are now 4-1.

"Iowa is a tough team," said head coach Carl Neufeld. "It was a hard fought match and to win without two of your top four players is an incredible challenge. I was really excited that our young players came through and our doubles is continuing to progress."

Usually playing No. 1 singles, Alex Skrypko was not in the singles line-up, but did play No. 3 doubles. The Mustangs are also doing without No. 4 singles, Oivind Alver as he had to return home for family matters.

SMU won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Federico Murgier and Chris Hooshyar took an 8-4 win over Gregory Holm and Christian Bierich at No.2 while Skrypko paired with Robin Fahgen at No. 3 for the 8-2 win over Tommy McGeorge and Patrick Dwyer. David Kuczer and Adolfo Solares played No. 1 doubles but dropped the match to J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou, 8-5.

Fahgen topped Ritchie at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Hooshyar powered past Holm, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Solares commanded at 6-4, 6-1 win over McGeorge at No. 5 singles as the Mustangs tallied three singles victories to take the match win. Murgier fell to van Monsjou at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3, and Kuczer could not get past Bierich at No. 2 as he fall, 6-3, 6-3. Iowa won the No. 6 singles due to default.

The Mustangs will remain in Minneapolis and return to action again on Sunday at 10 a.m. as they face No. 24 Minnesota.
