DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team faced a tough match-up against No. 4 Baylor this afternoon. The Mustangs battled a loaded Bears line-up as Baylor has four of their top six singles ranked in the nations top 100. SMU fell 7-0 and are now 4-4 on the season.
"I thought our singles played great," head coach Carl Neufeld said. "I felt like David (Kuczer), Federico (Murgier), Oivind (Alver) and Robin (Fahgen) all played one of the best matches I have seen them play this season. I am really excited because we are continuing to improve. You have to give credit to Baylor. They are a great squad and will be one of the favorites to win the national championships this year. They have a very good team this season."
The doubles competition was tough at every spot. The No. 1 Mustang duo of Alex Skrypko and Federico Murgier battled David Galic and Matija Zgaga as they fell, 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen fought with Denes Lukacs and Lars Poerschke as the Mustang pair was edged, 8-5. David Kuczer and Chris Hooshyar paired at No. 3 against the nationally ranked No. 50 doubles tandem Michal Kokta and Dominik Mueller as they fell, 8-5.
Skrypko faced No. 25 Kokta at No. 1 singles but was unable to come out on top as he fell, 6-3, 6-0. Kuczer battled No. 28 Poerschke into three sets at No. 2 singles as he fell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Murgier also took Matt Brown into three sets at the No. 3 spot as he was edged 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Alver battled it out with No. 100 Zgaga at No. 4 but fell, 6-4, 6-3, and Fahgen competed against No. 91 Mueller at No. 5 singles but was not able to top him, falling 7-6, 6-3. At No. 6 singles, Hooshyar could not power past Lukacs as he fell, 7-6, 6-3.
The Mustangs remain at home to face another nationally ranked opponent in No. 21 VCU this Sunday, March 4 at 10 a.m. at the Gleneagles Country Club.
