PINEHURST, N.C. (SMU) - Looking to repeat for the third-straight year, the SMU men's golf team holds a one-stroke lead following the opening round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at The Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8. SMU and senior Colt Knost won the event in both 2005 and 2006.
After carding an opening round 293, SMU leads Mississippi by one shot. Leading the way for SMU are Knost and Scott Barton, who are both at 1-under 71. Scott Sikes is in a 21st-place tie at 75, while Brandon DeStefano (76) and Frank Wrenn (78) are tied for 34th and 54th, respectively.
Seventeen teams are challenging SMU in 2007 including co-hosts ECU and Indiana, Ball State, Illinois, Marquette, Michigan, Penn State, Mississippi, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, Toledo, North Florida and Xavier.
Tournament play continues Monday with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 at 9 a.m.
