DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore midfielder Leone Cruz and Diogo de Almeida scored two goals apiece to lead the SMU men's soccer team to its highest offensive output of the season in a 5-1 victory over visiting Central Arkansas Sunday night at Westcott Field.
The Mustangs, who improved to 7-3-2 with the victory, struck first in the 19th minute. Senior Jeff Harwell fired a corner kick from the left corner, which freshman Adam Still headed back toward the net. The ball bounced off UCA goalkeeper Ernesto Pena to Cruz, who poked it in the net ... despite lying flat on his back after a collision in front of the net.
The Bears got the equalizer in the 32nd minute when Jordan Prescott knocked in a rebound, knotting the game at 1-1, a margin that would hold through the halftime intermission.
The Mustangs went ahead to stay in the 60th minute, when freshman forward Arthur Ivo blasted home a rebound of a shot by senior midfielder Gabe Arredondo for his second collegiate goal.
The Mustangs then opened the floodgates, pouring in three goals in 10 minutes. Cruz got his second goal of the game when he headed in a Harwell free kick in the 73rd minute. Then, in the 80th minute, de Almeida knocked in a rebound of a shot by senior Ryan Mirsky from point blank range. In the 83rd minute, the same pair hooked up again, with de Almeida scoring his second goal of the game - and third of the season - off a rebound of a Mirsky shot.
The Mustangs now return to conference games, welcoming Marshall to Westcott Field at 7 p.m. next Sunday, Oct. 19. For ticket information and a complete schedule, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
