SHREVEPORT, La. (SMU)-SMU men's swimming and diving traveled to Centenary College on Saturday where they met the Gents in a head to head meet resulting in a win for the Mustangs. SMU won the meet with score of 119, to Centenary's 78.
SMU started out the meet strong recording a new meet and pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.83. The team finished first a full four seconds ahead of the second place Centenary team. SMU also finished a fourth place team behind a time of 1:40.25.
The 200 medley relay wasn't the only record that succumbed to the Mustangs, as four others fell throughout the course of the meet. In the 1000 free, freshman Mitchell Thompson had an outstanding race in which he broke the meet and pool records touching in at 9:32.63. Fellow Mustang junior Edward Downes, placed first in the 200 fly and successfully posted a new meet and pool record as well, with a time of 1:52.54.
The 100 free was dominated by freshman Walter Rumans III who posted a 46.87 new pool record. Behind him, senior Travis Callaghan touched in at 49.93 placing third, and sophomore Lysle Witter came in at 51.73 for sixth place.
In the 200 back, junior Pontus Renholm left the competition in his wake as he swam to a new meet and pool record touching in at 1:49.43. Sophomore teammate Fabian Brunetti placed fourth with a time of 2:01.06, and sophomore George Mayer came in sixth clocking a 2:07.25.
Junior Thomas Fadnes had a first place showing in the 50 free with a time of 21.54, while junior Jerr Merritt came in fourth at 22.87 and Witter placed fifth touching in at 23.42. In the 500 free, senior Chris Ginder secured the number one spot posting a time of 4:54.04, and senior Ingraham claimed third with a time of 5:06.12.
In the 200 breast, senior Mitchell Johnson placed first coming in at 2:10.35. The 200 IM held another Mustang first place finish, as junior Maverick Smalley clocked in at 1:56.55 ahead of the opposition. Brunetti barely edged out senior Daniel Veale for second with a time of 2:00.21 to Veale's 2:00.26.
Freshman James Shake swam to a second place finish in the 200 free, touching in at 1:47.45 while Ingraham came in third at 1:51.41 and Callaghan placed fifth with a time of 1:51.97. Though unable to secure a 200 free relay win, the Mustangs placed second through fourth with times of 1:28.17, 1:28.58, and 1:30.18 respectively.
The Mustangs return to Joe Perkins Natatorium next Saturday for head to head competition with Penn State.
