MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) - Junior forward Dane Saintus came off the bench to score his third goal of the season and the SMU men's soccer team, ranked No. 15 in the country in the current National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, outshot their hosts, but it was not enough, as the Mustangs fell, 2-1, in overtime at Memphis.
The Ponies got on the scoreboard first when Saintus collected an assist from senior midfielder Jeff Harwell in the 31st minute and connected on a shot from outside the box, giving SMU a 1-0 lead that held up through the halftime intermission.
But the Tigers responded in the second half. Tripp Harkins scored on a header in the 70th minute to tie the score, forcing a deadlock that would last until the end of regulation. Three minutes into overtime (in the 93rd minute), Michael Coburn headed in the game-winner.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 6-3-1 overall, and 0-2-0 in Conference USA games. SMU now returns home to face South Carolina at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
